It Might Be A Mormon Thing

I've always been able to blend in. I don't necessarily like to fade into the background. But I also don't enjoy sticking out like a sore thumb. My sore thumb moments are definitely more frequent nowadays - with my kids in tow. But in general, I try to be culturally conforming. However, there are times when I do something, say something, wear something, or laugh at something that seems like the norm - when really it's a Mormon thing.

Like the time Nate and I were assigned to bring egg nog to the company Christmas party. We brought four gallons for a dozen people. "Wow!" somebody commented, "you Mormons sure know how drink egg nog!" as the host re-arranged the shot glasses and alcohol on the table to accommodate our gallons. How were we supposed to know that only Mormons drink egg nog by the mug full?

Last weekend Isaac brought home a "family project". We were supposed to decorate a turkey. Isaac picked his favorite color - blue. Which morphed into his favorite sport - football. And because the Cougars were playing. . . voila!
Isaac's school also starts with a B. The school color is blue and the mascot also happens to be a Cougar. Needless to say, Isaac's turkey attracted the most attention - and confusion . . . and misinterpreted school pride.

My co-workers used to jokingly call me "the Amish" because as my teacher friend pointed out, I "cover up too much". I thought it was because I never wore anything sleeveless. But looking back, I think it was probably my floral-patterned, ankle-length, button-up dresses that were still in style. . . among Mormons.

It took me about four years to figure out that when a new acquaintance invites me to get a "latte" it just means they want to be my friend.(don't worry. that's hot chocolate.)

I was utterly shocked when Isaac came home from preschool and told me that his teacher read him a book about Korihor. And that he LOVED it. He went straight upstairs and named his stuffed teddy, Korihor.

It was only my Mormon friends on Halloween that hooted and hollered at my clever "Amigos" costumes - quoting every hilarious line from the movie. I had to explain it to all the others. "No really. I know it sounds dumb. But it's like the funniest movie ever. I promise. seriously. You should rent it." Rent it?????
(Wait. Do only Mormons do that anymore?)

Then again . . .

It might not actually be a Mormon thing.

It might just be a dork thing.

Haha, I was about to say the same thing as Sara... I love the egg nog story. And Korihor the overall-clad teddy sounds like an awesome book! I love all your posts, they always make me laugh :)

You've got to love how we are "in the world but not of the world". There are totally some things that just don't translate from "world" to "mormon" and vice versa.

Tell Issac that I love his turkey. Too bad it wasn't enough to help the cougars win the big game.

Wait, you're mormon?

So, that turkey is awesome. First and foremost, it's just a really good turkey. It's also really funny that his school's mascot is also the cougar. Cougar-lovin' turkeys. That's funny.

I love the picture next to you in your Amish dress. Did a student draw that?

Haha! I laughed my head off at the Korihor one. I could totally see Emma doing that (except she'd probably hang the bear or pertend to kill it with a "sword"- is that a mormon thing or just Emma?) Now we're learning that there's uniquely Western and Southern "mormon things." Like if a Georgian mormon tells you to bring "coke" to a function they just mean soda.
