My parents are leaving their beautiful mountain home and their grandchildren and are moving to San Diego tomorrow. Why? Because my dad is going to be the president of Legoland.
At least that's what my kids think.
A while ago, during a conversation about our summer vacation plans, I reminded the kids that we probably won't go to the Ranch because Grandma Melissa and Grandpa Tim won't be living there this summer (or the next, or the next). There was some whining and complaining until Clayton piped in, "Oh yeah. I forgot Grandpa Tim was called to be the president of Legoland!" The whining was quickly replaced with an outburst of cheers for Lego Land.
I realized at that moment that maybe. Just maybe. I had overplayed the "fun" aspect of my parents' move to San Diego and might need to have a little talk with my children about um. . . missionary work???
Actually my parents have been called to be President (Director) of the (newly remodeled) Mormon Battalion Visitors Center in Old Town, San Diego. Where they will host a ton of activities and events, be in charge of several missionaries, greet school groups and tourists nonstop, and get to wear period clothing every day.
So I got on the computer and drummed up a few pictures to show the boys. . .
Remember this? When grandpa was a mission president in Mexico? Well, he and grandma will be doing kind of the same thing. Super busy. No time for Legos.

So it turns out my kids are WAY WAY WAY more excited to visit the "fighting museum" now than Legoland. . .
mission accomplished.

I'm excited to hear that there are Cannons in the Mormon Battalion! We are excited to have Tim & Melissa stay with us several nights this week on their way down to San Diego. It will be fun to be close enough to visit them on this mission.

Okay, I totally LOVE the Mormon Batallion monument! It has (or at least it used to have) the original painting of Christ's second coming. Plus, who doesn't want to pan for gold on their way through San Diego to Tijuhana?? (sp?) :)
President of Legoland. I LOVE it! Great post, in fact, I am stealing a couple of the pictures. (I never even saw the picture and article in the church news). Hopefully we still see you guys even if your summer vacations are spent in San Diego. Maybe we will have to coordinate some trips together!
What a fun adventure your parents are going to have! They seem like the perfect people for the job...well maybe the mission in Mexico was more your dad, and this seems more your mom! Programs, tours, MUSIC; they will be perfect. I am so sad that you won't be here in the summer to visit them. You better let me know if you ever come around to see your sisters because I better be on the list!

Awesome post. I am also going to take some of the pictures you posted. I want to visit Legoland (and the visitors center) with your boys just to watch their reactions to it all. Clayton's three-in-one puzzle is AMAZING!
