Come And Take It

***This is for my dear friend, ML, who commented on the last post that she "still operates a weaponry-free playroom" (Ha! you'll be shocked to see what ours has turned into!). . . and who is also a descendant of the Crocketts - which makes her a hero around these parts.***

As you can see, the Alamo has moved to our house - to our playroom to be exact. Nate and the boys built this fortress complete with cardboard cannons, an Alamo facade, and a replica of the "Battle of the Alamo Flag" that flew over its walls during Santa Anna's attack.

For the last several weeks the boys have been busy busy busy -
firing cannons. . .

taking shifts on the lookout post. . .
(I love the soldiers sleeping in bunks below)

and sounding the battle cry. . .

(Here they are in action:)

It's a tough job. . . but someone's got to defend the Alamo!

I love it! Just remember they're learning about history while having fun. I didn't even know what the Alamo was when I was a kid.

Ha ha ha! I laughed out loud for an estimated 3-4 minutes. Thanks for the shoot-out. I mean the shout-out. ;)

Oh, and I have a new arms control policy, thanks to your inspiration: If it is based on a pivotal historical event, and you can build it under my own roof with cardboard from the recycling bin, then you can shoot it in this playroom. How's that? :)

I was just wondering how I feel about the battle going on in my front room (Star Wars inspired). I think I will embrace it and be grateful to have a boy to shake things up around here. Maybe it's time to get some lightsabers, swords, and guns to assist in our battles. (So far baseball bats have worked just fine.) Thanks Emily, again for being my inspiration.

I tried. TRIED. to avoid toy-weapons. But even before we owned a toy light saber, they made them out of sticks, Legos, hangers, vacuum attachments, whatever.

Sigh. . .with a house full of little boys it's inevitable I guess.

I've never even tried to have the no weapons rule. PU-LEASE! Have you met my boys? I do try to stick with the no wrestling/fighting rule and Rick just rolls his eyes at me. I guess being from a family of 6 brothers he knows a little better than I do!

Your boys are so lucky. I still remember my neighborhood "wars", and asking why I always had to be the nurse or the "squaw", instead of the gun-toting soldier, or the mighty arrow-shooting Indian brave. I don't remember my mom or dad ever joining in, which would have made it even more fun (even if I did have to be the nurse). Your boys are extra lucky to have you as their mom and Nate as their dad.
Once again I want to live my life backwards, having learned from my children.
