So here I am in the hospital. No baby yet thankfully. Contractions have pretty much stopped and as far as everyone is concerned the baby and I are both "stable". I lost so much initial amniotic fluid that my stomach visibly shrunk and I hardly look pregnant at all. Which makes me even more aware of how little (and not ready) this baby is. Everyone here - the neonatal specialists, the maternal-fetal specialists, and my own doctor - seem concerned but confident. They are constantly weighing the risks of infection (and low amniotic fluid levels) the longer the baby stays in utero with a ruptured membrane verses the risk of delivering the baby too prematurely. They have been monitoring my contractions and the baby's heart rate non-stop. They check my vitals every two hours. And draw my blood every morning to check for even the slightest indication of infection. Right now, it looks like they are hopeful (as long as I don't go into labor) about letting the baby mature one more week before delivery (which means one more week tied to this hospital bed and away from my family - ugh). But apparently one week of fetal development at this stage makes a huge difference. Even so, it still means our baby girl will be born premature. Which scares me. And instead of 19 months apart, Eliza and her sister will be 17 months apart.
Overall I'm bored and having a hard time staying put - connected to so many wires. I'm worried about my baby - listening non-stop to her heartbeat on the monitor and panicking at every dip and spike. Worried about what complications might lie ahead. I'm thinking constantly about the kids at home - their meals, routines, homework, practicing, activities. Missing them more than ever and wishing I were at home to play with them, read to them, talk with them, and kiss them good night. But I'm also grateful in so many ways. I'm grateful my baby is alive - moving and doing well despite everything. I'm grateful for my mom - dropping everything to fly out here and (amazing as always) jump in and take over without missing a beat. I'm grateful for Nate - unflappable through it all, being the mom and the dad, running back and forth between baseball games, school, home, the hospital, and work. And being at my beckoning call (thanks for all your much needed deliveries - books, toiletries, a computer! I love you.) I'm grateful for so many friends. So many phone calls. So many visitors. So many prayers. So many people wanting to help - wanting to give. Taking care of my kids. Bringing me ice cream and treats. Bringing cards and fun things to keep me busy. I feel so loved. But mostly I'm grateful to be a mother - the work, the pain, the worry, the joy, the laughter, and the love.
Any day.

oh , wow!! that is so scary. I'll be praying for her and you. I'm so thankful for good doctors. What a blessing. take care of yourself.
You are in my prayers! It sounds like the doctors are taking good care of you and your baby. Hopefully she will grow and develop a lot in the next few days before she is delivered. My sister has had 2 premature babies and the 2nd one held on long enough for the steroid shot to do its thing. It helped immensely! I'm glad your mom is there!
Dearest Emily,
I am sorry to hear of your trouble. I asked the girls here to pray. I hope that is okay. I didn't give much detail but I know they all love you so much. Please take care and rest.
Love,
Amanda
We are praying for you and baby, hang in there!
I don't know if u know that my five year old, Zac was born at 28 weeks! My water broke just like u but I was already at five centemeters (we didn't even know I had been dialating!) so they couldn't put me on bed rest. I had to deliver and the steroid shot was only in my system for 6 hours before he came (they say it takes full effect after 8 hrs). But he was breathing on his own! He was amazingingly over 3 1/2 lbs! He only stayed in NICU 7 weeks (came home 5 weeks before his due date). And now he's an amazing healthy 5 year old!
I know God's hand was in our lives that day. I know The blessing Jamie gave me gave me and Zac strength. I know the prayers of our friends and family sent me comfort. The spirit was so strong in me that day and despite the circumstances I remember being oddly calm.
They always told us in the NICU that girls do better than boys. Plus that steroid shot has definately taken full afftect by now. And your a full month farther than I was. So I hope that eases your anxiety a little. But every week does help, even though it must be so hard to lay there waiting in a hospital bed, she'll be that much stronger cuz u did!!!
We used ECI (early childhood developement) therapy to get him caught up w developemental and motor skills. It's a state program.
Everything will be ok. Our thoughts and prayers are definately w u! Hang in there!!!
Emily, I'm so sorry to hear about what is going on there in Texas! I hope and pray that everything will go great during the next week and your beautiful baby girl will be born without any complications. Sounds like you have a team of wonderful people helping you in your time of need, just like you deserve. I'm sure if it was anyone else you would be the first person to help.
I guess I will stop thinkging that I'm ready to not be pregnant anymore and just take the next 6 weeks in stride knowing that things could be worse! A few kicks to the ribs is worth it.
You are in my thoughts and prayers... I hope all goes as well as it can!
Hang in there Emily. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Everything will work out.

I think about you and pray for you and baby all day long every day. I'm grateful Mom is able to be there. If you feel restless in that bed while waiting and want to talk to someone PLEASE call me.
