Isaac hates pirates. . . and loves them. Obsessively. It's like Darth Vader. So hated and so admired at the same time. But what Isaac loves most about pirates are their ships - granted, stolen. But still beauties to behold.In San Diego my parents arranged an outing for Isaac on a real pirate ship, the Treasure Seeker. Not just a walking tour through a ship docked in the harbor, but a real pirate excursion - set sail on the open sea. And shivermetimbers it was quite the pirate adventure!
Isaac brought a pirate hat to wear. He brought one for grandpa too. They both played the part well. When one of the "real" pirates asked Isaac about his missing front tooth he responded, "Arrggh, tis where I catch me cannonballs!"
On board the ship and out at sea, we were put to work swabbing the deck and calling back orders. The view of the harbor was spectacular.
One of the rum-guzzling pirates called out "and rum!" to everything, which Isaac mistook for "gum". He thought the gum-loving pirate was the most hilarious of them all.
Here's a taste of life aboard a pirate ship:
We were a quickly-trained crew. They had us firing water cannons at every approaching enemy ship - which was every ship including cruise ships, private yachts, and the USS Midway.
And if you didn't follow the cap'ins orders? To the gallows ye go! (I chuckle every time I see this picture. Isn't my dad great?)
A select few engaged in some swashbuckling sword fighting. This pirate had no idea who he was up against. Isaac may look like a beginner but there are years of practice in that sword-swiping arm of his!
And when the buried treasure was pulled out of the depths of the ocean (yes, they literally hoisted a chest from the bottom of the harbor!) A payment of gold and jewels was given to each crew member. . .
making for some very happy pirates!
Thanks mom and dad for an unforgettable day. Truly an adventure of a lifetime!

What a lucky kid. Jordie would DIE, absolutely die to do this. It looks like a fun adventure. I love the "gum" pirate. That is so funny. Probably a good thing Isaac didn't just assume "rum."
What an amazing adventure. Issac looks TOTALLY enthralled with the entire thing. I am sure that you are also cherishing your time alone with him. Alone time doesn't come around that often!
