Isaac has become quite the history buff. His teacher reports that he takes command at recess organizing the other children as soldiers and leading them into battle against the Red Coats. It's a game known among all the first graders (most of whom - funny enough - are expatriates) as "American Revolution". At home though, the Civil War is in full force with Isaac and Brig in their Union Soldier gear, setting up camp and defending the Union from various "posts" around the house.
Around Thanksgiving, Isaac came home from school toting a note from his teacher explaining his "red" behavior marks. When I asked him about it he said, "We learned about the Mayflower today and I was almost crying because I couldn't wait to come home and build it. I just couldn't think about anything else!" An hour later he was proudly displaying his Lego version of the Mayflower complete with an upper and lower deck. So cool. I emailed these to his teacher who subsequently forgave him for his inattention and fidgeting at school.
Isaac's George Washington Nutcracker project is still on display at school. He did his report on a book (he highly recommends) called "George Washington's Socks" about a group of kids who travel back in time and end up helping George Washington's army cross the Delaware.
I learn something new all the time from this kid. It is so fun reliving American history right in my own home. And I'm glad his heroes are all real historical people. Now I just need to get him to read (and live by) this book:
