Picture Perfect

No. I'm not a professional photographer. I own a cheapo point-and-click camera from ebay. (But I dream about owning a kick-butt-mega-bucks-super-cool camera like the professionals. . . hint, hint, Santa)
The thing is, though. . . I've never met a "professional photographer" who can take a decent picture of my children. I don't care what kind of lens they think they have! I've tried. several times. And I'm always disappointed. Because here's the secret. It takes about 300 shots to maybe. Maybe get one semi-decent picture of my kids. And that's totally at random. So sadly, I am still the only person alive (ebay camera and all) who is willing to waste the time and the film on something with such low probabilities.

Last weekend I tried to take a picture (ha ha) of the kids. I went through my usual camera-clicking frenzy hoping to get a good one. I didn't.
So this morning I was mass-deleting those pictures from my camera when I found myself chuckling. . . laughing. . . and guffawing OUT LOUD!
Like at this sequence for example:

sweet, huh?

until you zoom out a little. . .
nice.

And yeah, Brigham. I see what you taught Eliza to do.

I just can't win.
So here's a short film in honor of the circus I go through in an attempt to take "the perfect picture". . .

Because sometimes it's the imperfections
that make it

so. . .

so. . .

perfect.

With each kid I've added to the count, I've realized that my idea of a "perfect picture" doesn't exist anymore. My goal is to have no tears. That makes a perfect picture for me. I think the expressions your boys have are priceless.

Dear Emily,
Of all the people in the world, I think you deserve/need/didn't know how much you really wanted a digital SLR (aka big fancy camera).

You can get a Canon Rebel for a few hundred with your ebay skills. My dream camera right now it the Canon Rebel T1i, takes great photos AND video. But it is a few hundred more.

If you didn't want to get that fancy you could get a Canon G11.

Right now I have a super mega crappy digital SLR that they don't even make anymore but I can tell you that it has made a HUGE difference with my photo taking.

I would buy you one. That is how strongly I feel that you need to want this. But I need to buy me one first :).

I promise my second born child that you would never ever ever regret spending the money on this.

It won't make your kids hold still. But it will make better pictures of them not holding still.

So, so, so, so, so, sincerely,
Christina

But until then. . .

For all of you reading this: please keep this post in mind when you get our Christmas letter (and picture) this year. . .

You know, as you described the impossibility of a good picture, most moms reading it would be able to relate. I felt I could.

Then I saw your video.

And while laughing hysterically, I realized---no words could describe it. And no, I don't think I can truly relate. That was awesome.

You are SO funny!

I seriously think your pics are the best! You always manage to capture them in action - which makes their expressions so REAL!

Rather than the fake, cheezy smiles.

I have been wondering how you are doing. I love it because I think a lot of pictures are so untrue. Hope you are getting a little sleep.
